Skydiving is one of those things that everyone says they’d like to do…someday.
But if you’re ready to make the jump, now, you may have some questions. This month’s post will answer the common questions we get from first time skydivers.
What should I wear?
Be comfortable! The only thing we ask is to be aware of your footwear. No sandals, flip-flips, or hiking boots. Tennis shoes, jeans, and a t-shirt are all appropriate for skydiving.
Is it okay to eat before I jump?
Of course! Skydiving is not like going on a roller coaster or swimming. You will not experience that stomach-dropping feeling, nor will you be exerting yourself as you would swimming. However, if you have a nervous stomach and would rather wait to eat until after your jump, then please do so!
How fast will I fall?
Terminal velocity is 120 miles per hour. For the average person, you’ll reach terminal velocity about 10 seconds into freefall. That’s about 200 seconds per foot!
From how high do we jump?
World Skydiving Center flies to 10,000 feet, guaranteed. At some times of the year, we may have a different plane available that can take you even higher–all the way to 14,000 feet!
Is it hard to breathe?
It may take a few seconds to get used to, but you can breathe normally while skydiving just as you would on the ground.
What does freefall feel like?
Freefall is like no other experience you’ve ever had. It feels less like falling and more like flying! You’ll feel and hear the rush of wind, and be able to see the world from higher than a bird’s point of view. It’s an amazing experience that is cannot be duplicated in any other sport or activity!
What if I’m afraid of heights?
We hear this a lot, but the truth is most first-time skydivers feel much more secure after we take them through tandem training. The fear of heights, while very real on the ground, tends to disappear once we are above the clouds. Out of all of our customers who have said they are afraid of heights, not one has ever landed from their tandem skydiving experience and not enjoyed the experience!
What if I have a disability?
The wonderful thing about skydiving is that even people with disabilities can enjoy the experience of flying without wings! You should be able to skydive with almost any type of disability. Of course, you should always ask your doctor first if skydiving is okay. Also, you’ll need to tell your instructor ahead of time of any issues, particularly if you have back or joint problems. If you have any physical disabilities that we are unsure of, we may require proof from your doctor that it is safe for you to skydive.
